The Bing Bang Bong 2v1 drill from Dave Smith focuses on puck movement, timing, and defenseman activation. With short passes, long passes, and D joining the rush, this flow drill is ideal for game-day skates or up-tempo practices.
Setup
- Pucks start with defensemen in opposite corners.
- Forwards are placed on all four blue lines.
- Drill runs continuously from one end of the ice to the other.
Execution
- Defenseman begins skating and makes a moving pass to a forward crossing the blue line.
- Forward receives the puck and drops it back on the defensive side to a teammate.
- The puck carrier skates to the red line and makes a pass to the opposite-side defenseman.
- That defenseman whips a cross-ice pass to the next forward in line on the far side.
- Three phases follow this flow:
- Short Pass: After puck movement, forwards attack 2v1 against the defenseman who followed the play.
- Long Pass: Same flow, but D passes long across to create a stretch play before the 2v1 attack.
- D Activation: The D receives a pass, jumps up into the play, and joins the two forwards for a 3v1.
- Each time a D joins the rush, the next D initiates the next rep to maintain continuous flow.
Coaching Points
- Encourage defensemen to pass while moving and keep their heads up.
- Emphasize communication and eye contact between forwards during puck exchanges.
- Encourage defending D to gap up quickly.
- Maintain tempo and clean timing through the neutral zone swing and entry.
- Allow defensemen to be aggressive and join the rush confidently during D activation phase.
- Great pre-game or light-day drill to build rhythm, confidence, and pace.
