The slap shot is the most powerful shot in hockey, requiring proper hand positioning, weight transfer, and technique to maximize accuracy and power.
Coaching Points:
- Hand Positioning: Slide your bottom hand down the stick and keep hands away from the body.
- Take Ice Before the Puck: Aim to hit the ice just before making contact with the puck to generate power.
- Weight Transfer: Shift weight from the back foot to the front foot during the shot for maximum strength.
- Follow Through with Shoulder: Drive the bottom shoulder toward the net (left for left-handed shooters, right for right-handed).
- Progress with Movement: Start with stationary pucks, then move to sliding pucks, focusing on keeping the head up.
- Incorporate Fakes: Practise faking a slap shot before taking the actual shot to improve mobility and deception.
