Setting Up Off Ice Shooting

Get Full Access

Setting up an off-ice shooting session with proper hand positioning, puck placement, and technique helps players improve shot power and accuracy, translating better to on-ice performance.

Coaching Points:

  1. Puck Placement: Set pucks a few feet in front of you to allow a natural pull into your shooting position.
  2. Hand Positioning: Keep hands hip-width apart, with the top hand up and away from the body and bottom hand in a firm, controlled position.
  3. Weight Transfer for Power: Generate power primarily from the legs, transferring weight smoothly for more effective shots.
  4. Keep Head Up: Focus on keeping your head up to aim and develop the habit for game situations.
  5. Shooting Technique Over Quantity: Practise quality shots with correct form rather than focusing on high shot counts.
  6. Stay Patient: Practise consistently; while off-ice shooting is easier without skates, the skill will translate to on-ice improvement over time.
