Practising the backhand shot off the ice improves scoring potential by emphasizing weight transfer, puck control, and quick releases.
Coaching Points:
- Focus on Proper Hand Positioning: Position the top hand high and bottom hand firmly on the stick for control, with the blade cupped over the puck.
- Master Weight Transfer: Generate power by shifting weight from the back foot to the front foot as you pull with the bottom hand.
- Two Types of Backhand Shots:
- Wrist Shot: Start with the puck on the heel, transferring to the middle of the blade as you open up for release.
- Snapshot: Begin with the puck on the toe, then snap as it reaches the middle of the blade.
- Practice Puck Movement: Progress to pulling the puck across the body from forehand to backhand to simulate game scenarios.
- Quick Release for Close-Range Shots: Work on chipping the puck quickly from forehand to backhand to lift it over a goalie’s pad or shoulder when close to the net.
- Add Stickhandling and Fakes: Increase shot effectiveness by incorporating quick fakes or switching between forehand and backhand shots during practice.
