Opening Up Quick Step on D-Retrievals

Get Full Access

This video focuses on a "quick step" technique for defencemen to use during puck retrievals, teaching players to avoid lunging and instead perform a controlled heel-to-heel stop that maintains balance and enables a quicker acceleration.

Coaching Points:

  1. Heel-to-Heel Transition: When transitioning direction, use a small heel-to-heel step to maintain stability and prevent overcommitting to one side.
  2. Avoid the Big Lunge: Instead of a large step, use a controlled mini-step to maintain balance and prevent getting stuck, allowing for a smoother pivot back into acceleration.
  3. Load the Inside Foot: Focus on loading the inside foot under the body when transitioning to allow for immediate acceleration after the stop.
  4. Practice with and without Crossovers: Using a crossover adds speed, but practice without it to gain control and adapt to various game scenarios.
  5. Head and Shoulder Positioning: Keep head and shoulders aligned with the puck and target area, preparing for a quick pass or puck retrieval as the play unfolds.

By refining these movements, defencemen can enhance their ability to respond to pressure and gain speed on puck retrievals in the defensive zone.
