This video demonstrates the progression of teaching a crossover start, emphasizing proper technique, body positioning, and the importance of quick starts in hockey.

Coaching Points:

  1. Start with Fundamentals: Focus on turning the head, shoulders, and stick first, driving the knee across while landing on the ball of the foot for a smooth crossover start.
  2. Push with Outside Edge: Push with the outside edge of the back foot and quickly open the other foot into a V position for immediate acceleration.
  3. Progress from Slow to Fast: Begin with slow, controlled movements to teach young players the correct technique, and gradually increase speed as they improve.
  4. Combine with Stops: Teach players to integrate stops into their crossover starts, emphasizing proper stopping form before transitioning to a quick takeoff.
  5. Stay Low: Ensure players maintain a low stance throughout the movement, avoiding standing up between stops and starts.
  6. Incorporate into Drills: Add crossover starts into various game scenarios, such as races, backchecks, or getting into open spaces, to improve overall game speed.
