How to Create Space Off the Boards

Get Full Access

This video explains how to create space off the boards by cutting toward the middle of the ice, using deception to draw defenders out of position, and creating more time and opportunities for puck control.

Coaching Points:

  • Always shoulder check before receiving the puck to ensure you have time and space to make a play.
  • Focus on taking one or two steps off the boards towards the middle to force the defender to adjust.
  • Use deception by looking one way and then cutting or chipping the puck in the opposite direction.
  • Stay in motion to avoid getting flat-footed; move your feet to maintain momentum when receiving a pass or rim.
  • Encourage offensive players to practice driving defenders to the middle, opening up time and space behind them for better puck possession and offensive opportunities.
