This is a great drill to help players work on backwards skating, opening up facing the puck, rhythm, and receiving to shooting. It is a flow drill, so it allows for much more touches and reps per player allowing them to really focus on the minor details.
SETUP:
- To set up this drill, the net should be placed on the goal line in line with the faceoff circle. There should be a line of players and a pile of pucks in the corner.
- There are three players in motion at all times, however, to start there should be one at about the hashmarks facing the line ready to skate backwards, one player in front of the line ready to give a pass up the wall, and the other off the post of the net.
HOW THE DRILL WORKS:
- To begin the drill, F2 (The player in the front of the line) will pass back and forth with F1 as they skate backwards up the wall. They should try to remain a 15-foot gap at all times.
- When F1 hits the blue line, they will stop with the puck and points their heels towards the wall, ready to give a pass to the middle. F2 will continue skating, go around the dot and open up facing F1 for a pass.
- After F2 receives this pass, they should immediately get the puck off their hip and eyes up to look for F3's stick where they make a hard solid pass.
- After F1 makes their pass to F2, they time it just right so that after F3 gets the pass, they are able to give it right to F1 to practice quickly shooting after receiving a pass.
- Because this is a rotation drill, after F3 makes their pass, they go to the back of the line. F2 swings down and pivots backwards and becomes the new F1. F1 becomes the new F3.
COACHING POINTS:
- This drill works a lot on passing, so the players should really be working on their communication. Consistently showing a good target of where they want the pass and when by using their voice.
- This is also not a drill where there should be a lot of stick handling. The puck should get right off the hip and the eyes should immediately get up to look for the next play.
- The shot in this drill is also supposed to be executed well, once the pass is received the shot should be taken, it is not a time to stickhandle, everything should be quick.
