This video introduces the concept of adding deception to a player's game using three layers: head movement, stick and puck positioning, and foot direction.
Coaching Points:
-
Three Layers of Deception:
- Head Movement: Turning your head to fake a direction, such as looking like you’re going to pass or move a certain way.
- Stick and Puck Movement: Position your stick and puck to sell the fake, making it appear that you’re going to pass, shoot, or go in a certain direction.
- Foot Movement: Use your feet to further sell the fake by pointing your toes or shifting your weight in the direction you want to deceive your opponent.
-
Application:
- Practice these techniques by starting with simple movements, such as turning your head and stick in one direction while cutting back in the other.
- When executing a two-on-one, use head and stick fakes to sell the pass before quickly switching to a shot.
- Use these techniques in one-on-one situations by faking a direction with your head, stick, and feet, then cutting back in the opposite direction.
-
Drills:
- Practice the basic head and stick fake while skating at different speeds to get comfortable.
- Use cones or imaginary defenders to simulate game situations where you need to create space by using deception.
- Increase the complexity by adding more movement with your feet and combining all three layers of deception.
By mastering these layers of deception, players can become much more effective at evading defenders and creating opportunities for themselves and their teammates.
