This video focuses on understanding the three key shooting areas, or "shooting boxes," that players should aim to utilize for effective shooting.
Coaching Points:
-
Forehand Shooting Box: This area is beside the player’s feet, about one stick blade length away from the skates and one blade length up and down. This is the ideal position for taking wrist shots, snapshots, or quick releases. Players should work to receive passes in this area to maximize their shot power and accuracy.
-
Front Shooting Box: Positioned directly in front of the player’s body. This shooting box is useful for one-timers or when catching and releasing pucks quickly. The positioning is similar to the forehand shooting box, but it’s located in front rather than to the side.
-
Backhand Shooting Box: This area is on the backhand side, again about one stick blade length away and up or down. Many players struggle with the backhand because they position the puck too far forward or back. When shooting from the backhand box, players should focus on pulling the puck using their fingers, rather than pushing, to get a better shot release.
By working on these three shooting areas, players will have better control over their shots, increase power, and develop a more accurate shot in different situations on the ice.
