This video breaks down the "McLateral" move, a lateral deception technique inspired by a goal by Connor McDavid. The focus is on using lateral movements to push defenders in one direction before cutting back the other way to create space and scoring opportunities.

Coaching Points:

  • Layers of Deception:

    • Head and Eyes: Players should turn their head and eyes in one direction to mislead defenders.
    • Stick and Puck: Follow the head movement by showing the stick and puck in the same direction.
    • Feet: Finally, shift the feet to further sell the move before cutting back the opposite way.
  • Push-to-Push Movement: For beginners, focus on pushing one way and immediately pushing back the other way, using strong inside edges. Ensure the puck moves quickly to maintain control and deceive the defender.

  • Crossovers and Speed: For more advanced players, use crossovers to add speed. Push the defender with one or two crossovers before cutting back, gaining speed and separation.

  • Puck Protection: When executing the move, keep the puck protected close to the body. Avoid leaving the puck too far in front where it can be poked away by a defender.

  • Set Up the Defender: Approach the defender at a slight angle to draw them in, then quickly change direction using either the push-to-push or crossover technique.

  • Progression: Start with basic inside edge pushes before progressing to crossovers. This allows players to build confidence and control before incorporating speed and more advanced elements.

  • Reading the Defender: Teach players to read the defender's positioning and react accordingly to create separation and generate scoring opportunities.
