The IFK 3v1 Plus 1 from Dave Smith is a continuous, high-tempo transition drill that reinforces backcheck responsibility, defensive zone structure, quick breakouts, and odd-man rush reads. It’s designed to create chaos, demand communication, and simulate game-like pressure in both directions.
Setup
- Three offensive players (red) begin with a 3-on-1 attack against one defenseman.
- A backchecker starts tracking behind the 3 forwards.
- Additional players are staged along the boards at each blue line.
Execution
- Drill starts with a 3-on-1 rush. The backchecker tracks and joins play as the rush crosses the offensive blue line.
- 3 additional players from the blue line join to form a 5v3 against the red team in the defensive zone.
- The red team is trying to score.
- When the defensive team regains puck possession they immediately transition to offense and breakout.
- A new red defenseman joins the play, while one red player becomes the backchecker.
- Play continues continuously in both directions, with new players rotating in on each possession change.
Coaching Points
- Need each line to communicate to sort out responsibilities and coverage.
- Encourage quick transitions on both sides of the puck.
