Off Ice Training Slap Shot

Get Full Access

The slap shot is the most powerful shot in hockey, requiring proper hand positioning, weight transfer, and technique to maximize accuracy and power.

Coaching Points:

  1. Hand Positioning: Slide your bottom hand down the stick and keep hands away from the body.
  2. Take Ice Before the Puck: Aim to hit the ice just before making contact with the puck to generate power.
  3. Weight Transfer: Shift weight from the back foot to the front foot during the shot for maximum strength.
  4. Follow Through with Shoulder: Drive the bottom shoulder toward the net (left for left-handed shooters, right for right-handed).
  5. Progress with Movement: Start with stationary pucks, then move to sliding pucks, focusing on keeping the head up.
  6. Incorporate Fakes: Practise faking a slap shot before taking the actual shot to improve mobility and deception.
