How to Use the Back of the Net to Your Advantage

Get Full Access

This video discusses how players can effectively use the back of the net to their advantage, both offensively and defensively, by adding deception, using tight spaces, and creating time and space for better puck control and playmaking.

Coaching Points:

  1. Use the back of the net as a safe zone to create time and space, especially for defensemen setting up plays.
  2. Stay tight to the net when evading defenders to make it harder for them to follow your movements and disrupt your play.
  3. Practice adding deception through fakes with your head, shoulders, and stick to throw off defenders and create separation.
  4. Bank pucks off the boards or back of the net when under pressure to change direction quickly and avoid turnovers.
  5. Incorporate tight-area drills in practice to help players get comfortable maneuvering behind the net under pressure.
