Welcome to Day 2 of 5 Days to a Harder Shot!
If you missed the first day, find it here:
This video explains the importance of puck placement on the blade and in relation to the body to achieve a harder, more powerful shot.
Coaching Points:
-
Blade Placement:
- For a wrist shot, start the puck on the heel of the blade and allow it to roll toward the middle as you release.
- Avoid twisting the wrists excessively or opening the blade too early, which reduces power.
- For a snapshot, start the puck on the toe of the blade with a slight gap between the puck and blade before snapping through.
-
Puck Positioning:
- Keep the puck close to the body, approximately a blade length away and within a defined "shooting box."
- Avoid extending the puck too far in front or behind, which can compromise power and accuracy.
- Use a stick or other markers to create a visual boundary for practicing within the optimal shooting box.
-
Hand Technique:
- Keep the top hand up and away from the body to create proper leverage and generate more power.
- Focus on pushing with the bottom hand to flex the stick and drive the shot.
-
Body Mechanics:
- Incorporate proper weight transfer from the back foot to the front foot during the shot.
- Drive the shoulders toward the net while maintaining a balanced posture.
- Keep the head up and toe caps directed at the net for improved accuracy and power.
-
Drills:
- Use markers to define the shooting box and prevent the puck from being placed too far back or forward.
- Practice shooting with focus on technique rather than volume, aiming for quality repetitions.
- Adjust the shooting box as needed for comfort and progression.
Implementing these techniques will improve shot power and control while fostering better habits for puck placement.
